Anniston resident John Marshall Gruenewald, 77, passed away Sunday, November 16, 2025. There will be a graveside service at Oakwood Cemetery in Georgiana, Alabama Friday, November 21, at 3:00 and a memorial service in Anniston at a time to be announced later.
Mr. Gruenewald is a native of Georgiana, Alabama, and is survived by his brother, Christopher Irvin Gruenewald (Linda); his nieces, Leslie Gruenewald Baggett (Beau); Monica Gruenewald Pate (Jimmy); and Julia Gruenewald Bernstein (Jeremy); his nephews, Michael Stuart Gruenewald (Diane); Christopher Irvin Gruenewald, Jr.; and Stewart Whit Gruenewald; a number of great nieces and great nephews; and his longtime girlfriend, Sherry Kughn.
He was preceded in death by his parents Audrey Maples Gruenewald and Irvin Hugo Gruenewald and his brother, Mark Stuart Gruenewald and sister-in-law Brenda Bush Gruenewald.
Mr. Gruenewald graduated from Georgiana High School in 1966. He then graduated from Samford University in 1970 and Cumberland School of law in 1973. After graduating from law school, Mr. Gruenewald served as an assistant attorney general for the State of Alabama. He then served in Dothan, Alabama as an assistant district attorney and was in private practice for several years. He then served as an assistant district attorney in Mobile, Alabama and thereafter as an assistant district attorney in Anniston, Alabama for the remainder of his career.
He was a member of Parker Memorial Baptist Church, serving on the finance committee. He was a member of the Kiwanis Club of Anniston, the Ham Radio Operators Club and the Sons of the American Revolution, where he served as secretary. He also served for several years as a chaplain at Regional Medical Center and attended two breakfast groups with friends each week.
John loved to read, attend community events and walk and hike for exercise. His gregarious personality earned him many friends. Many considered him a Southern gentleman because of his good manners and kind ways
