It is with our deepest sorrow that we announce the passing of a devoted husband, father, brother, firefighter, and friend, Wayne Smith. To know Wayne was to love him. He never met a stranger — and if he did, it wasn’t long before they became a friend.
From a young age until his passing, Wayne was an adamant fisherman, just like his father; stubborn like his mother; and a hardworking man who carried the strength and values of both his parents throughout his life. He dedicated himself fully to everything he did, especially to his family, The Town of Mckenzie, and his faith in God.
To say he was the dad he didn’t have to be would be an understatement. Wayne proudly called four children his own and loved them unconditionally. One of his greatest joys in life was being present and involved in the lives of each of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Watching them grow brought him more happiness than he ever felt he deserved or expected.
Wayne is survived by his loving wife, Beverly Gail; his children, Melissa Renee Garner; Tonya Delaney (Dave); Shawn Keeffee (Tenea); and James Keeffee (Liz); 15 grandchildren; and 4 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by three sisters and one brother: Charles Smith (Cindy), Judy Smith, Lou Ann Carter, and Rebie Scruggs.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Lula Dot Smith; his father, John Franklin; his brother, Glen Smith; his sister, Thera Cartwright; his brother-in-law, Allan Wingard; his brother-in-law, Jimmy Scruggs; and his brother-in-law, Dave Carter.
In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests that donations be made in Wayne’s honor to the McKenzie Volunteer Fire Department or to the volunteer fire department of your choice.
Wayne’s legacy of love, laughter, hard work, and dedication to family and community will live on in all who were blessed to know him.
