Albert Wendell Powell

Albert Wendell Powell, 88, passed away peacefully at his home on Thursday, July 23, 2026, just steps from where he was born on March 21, 1938.

He attended Friendship School and graduated from Georgiana High School in 1956. On May 2, 1959, he married Faye Phelps, and together they built a life centered around faith, family, and farming. They were blessed with four daughters. In 1967, they built Powell’s Grocery and Service Station. For eleven years, they served the community and developed lifelong friendships with their customers.

Wendell was a Rural Mail Carrier and a proud veteran of the U. S. Air Force. He was a lifelong member of Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church.

He was a true steward of the land and took great pride in caring for the place he called home. He loved animals and especially enjoyed raising and caring for his cows. His knowledge of livestock and agriculture was well respected in the community.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 65 years, Faye Phelps Powell; his parents, Arthur Henry and Annie Sue Joyner Powell; and his siblings, Hilton Powell, Jean Alverson, Maxine Medley, Harold Powell, and Bonnie Sue Clements.

He is survived by his four daughters, Susan (Walter) Nolan, Tina (Mark) Colvin, Wendy Branning, and Amy Doss. He also leaves to cherish his memory seven grandchildren: Thomas (Meredith) Nolan, Bethany (Zachary) Fenimore, Nicholas (Hollan) Colvin, Mitchell Colvin, Sommer (Stephen) Hindman, Joyner Doss, and Tucker Doss; six great-grandchildren, Bayne and Mary Watson Nolan, Harper Fenimore, and Sterling, Emmett, and Helena Hindman; a host of nieces, nephews, other family members, and friends; and his special puppy, Clyde.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, July 26, 2026, at 2:00 p.m., with visitation one hour prior at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church. Brother Danny Dean will officiate, and Johnson Funeral Home will direct. Burial will follow at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Thomas Nolan, Nicholas Colvin, Mitchell Colvin, Joyner Doss, Tucker Doss, Lynn Powell, and Lance Powell.

Flowers will be accepted, or donations may be made to the Mt. Pleasant Cemetery Association in care of Lynn Powell or the FIW Volunteer Fire Department in care of Brittany Sheffield.
